Building Conversational AI for Messenger

Developer Circles London is proud to announce a hackathon that is focused on building conversational AI for Facebook Messenger. This is a two day Hackathon that will take place at the Facebook HQ in London where you will be able to brainstorm, create and hack alongside experts from Facebook!

The goal of this Hackathon is to build intelligent chatbots on the Messenger Platform by the use of a PyTorch back-end.

The solution can cover any (useful) area of modern life. There are only two requirements:
1. Make the bot accessible through the Messenger Platform (in addition feel free to add other channels if you desire)
2. Let PyTorch power a significant part of the bot's intelligence.

If you’re not familiar with either Messenger Chatbots or PyTorch, fear not! We’ll make sure to prepare you by sending relevant training materials ahead of time and we will provide workshops and guidance throughout the event.

Prizes:

We have some very cool prizes lined up for the winning team members. We will announce the prizes at the beginning of December.

JOIN US

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

This hackathon is open to both software developers and people in tech. We encourage non-software developers to participate, especially if you have a great idea that you think is worth creating! We can help you find a team of developers that can help you execute the idea.

DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO PARTICIPATE?

No! Throughout the Hackathon you will be able to attend sessions and workshops to learn from the Facebook employees about both of the technologies. We are also going to send you materials ahead of time to help you prepare.

DO I NEED A TEAM?

You can sign up as an individual or as a team. At the time of signing-up please let us know if you would like to be matched with a team or if you are a team that is looking for additional members.  Once you sign-up we will get in touch to help you  get you matched!

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Please sign-up using this page to show your initial interest in participating in the Hackathon. We are then going to invite you to our Hackathon platform where you can form your teams.

What is PyTorch?

PyTorch is an open source  machine learning library.  PyTorch integrates with Python, making the coding  simple and easy. It is  one of the fastest growing machine learning  frameworks.

What is Messenger Platform?

Facebook Messenger is a messaging app and platform that can be built on.   The platform  allows us to use a  set of APIs and tools  to create interactive applications and bots inside the Facebook Messenger app.

Text Block #1

How can you merge PyTorch & Messenger  to create a cool idea?

This is really up to you and your imagination. We are hoping to see all sorts of inventive ideas that mix the abilities of machine learning and messenger. We are intentionally trying not to give you too much guidance as we don’t want to influence your creativity! However, just to make it a little bit easier, here is one of the ideas that one of the teams will be working on:

Problem

I walk past a historical statue or a building and I want to know more info about it.

Solution

The ability to take a picture of the object using messenger and analyse it using machine learning so we can surface useful information about it to the user .

How can you merge the two to create a cool idea?

BACKGROUND

In 1966, Joseph Weizenbaum created a natural language processing computer program, named ELIZA, to demonstrate the superficiality of communication between humans and machines.
Ever since then, researchers and developers have been working on creating truly intelligent "chatbots" that understand human emotion and context.
Competitions like the Loebner Prize have been held, where chatbots undergo the Turing Test (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test) to test their capabilities.
If the evaluator cannot reliably tell the machine from the human, the machine is said to have passed the test. The test results do not depend on the machine's ability to give correct answers to questions, only how closely its answers resemble those a human would give.
The techniques that power bots range from simple pattern matching, parsing, intent recognition, to more structured and sophisticated approaches like AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language) and Markov chains.
